The 2023 Scrappy Sampler Block of the Week
This is a mystery quilt along. I'll give you a general idea of the layout and size plus an option to make a smaller version. Since I'm running this as a scrap quilt, I will not be giving fabric requirements. Because of the variety of the blocks, it would be impossible to do that. However, I'd start with what you have (scraps, a fat quarter bundle, etc..) and know that you may need more fabric depending on how many blocks you decide to make. As for background, if you want to use a single color background, start with a few yards and make a note of exactly what background you are using so that you can purchase more as needed. Solids run fairly consistent so even if it's not from the same bolt, as long as you get the same color by the same company, it will be okay in your quilt.
I'm planning a mix of blocks that use a few different skills- machine piecing, foundation paper piecing, and appliqué- in a few different block sizes. While I will be making the all of the blocks for my quilt, you can pick and choose if you'd like. If you don't like a certain block, you can make a different one twice or substitute another one entirely.
I designed this quilt to be like a large nine patch. In each patch, there are a number of blocks. It is a BIG quilt finishing at 92.5" square. If you'd like to participate but make a smaller quilt, you can make a 4 patch instead of a nine patch and that'll measure 64.5" square.
There are two sashing options for this quilt- an easy one and a difficult one.
Here is the layout for the quilt with the more difficult sashing-
Here is the layout for the quilt with the easier sashing-
I'll be giving the sashing instructions with Blocks 8,9, and 10. You can work on the sashing little by little during the quilt along (especially if you choose to make the more difficult one), after we finish the blocks, or any combination of that. It is completely up to you.
As we go through the quilt along, we will make the blocks for a section in order. Once we have made all the blocks that go into one section, I'll share joining instructions for that section. So, if you want to make a 4 patch instead, you'll only complete 4 sections of the quilt and then assemble it.
Let's talk schedule! Since I'm looking forward to some really great sewing during the week after Christmas, we are going to have a block pattern a day for that week! But then after January 1st, we will slow the speed down a little and do three block patterns per week.
I think that covers it! Let me know if you have any questions. If you'd like to share your work on Instagram, we will be using the hashtags- #2023scrappysampler and #jessicadayonpatterns
I'm really looking forward to this and I hope you are too!
Thanks for sewing with me!
Jessica
