Savor the Season Quilt Along- Week 3

Good Morning!  Welcome to Week 3 of the Savor the Season Quilt Along!

To see more information about this quilt along, click on the links below to see the earlier posts.  Here is the schedule we will follow during our quilt along-

Savor the Season Quilt Along
Week 3- April 16- Small star blocks- this week
Week 4- April 23- Strip blocks
Week 5- April 30- Geese blocks
Week 6- May 7- Assemble the quilt top

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Week 3, we are making the 36 small stars.  The instructions for the blocks can be found in the 'Steadfast' pattern (from Season to Taste: Quilts that Warm Your Home All Year Long) that begins on page 27.

To make the 36 small star blocks, you will follow the instructions on page 29 under the header called "Making the Blocks".  Follow steps 2- 3 to make the 36 small star blocks. IMPORTANT: We are making 144 flying geese- 36 sets of 4 flying geese (not the 176 listed in the pattern in step 2) and we are making 36 small stars (not the 44 listed in the pattern in step 3).

When you go to the instructions in the book, each step tells you exactly what size pieces you need to make each part of the block so you can use those sizes to cut your pieces.  If you are making exactly as I am, I will tell you the cutting instructions for your fabric below-

If you are making the quilt using Strawberry Honey or following the color scheme that I am, here are the cutting instructions-

For the Small Star Blocks:

Note: I made 4 red stars, 12 yellow stars, 4 green stars, 8 aqua stars, and 8 pink stars for a total of 36 stars.

-From the Red fat quarters (to make 4 stars),
                Cut 2- 1 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 32- 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares
                Cut 1- 2 1/2" x 21" strip; cross cut into 4- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares

-From the Yellow fat quarters (to make 12 stars),
                Cut 7- 1 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 96- 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares
                Cut 2- 2 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 12- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares

-From the Green fat quarters (to make 4 stars),
                Cut 2- 1 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 32- 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares
                Cut 1- 2 1/2" x 21" strip; cross cut into 4- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares

-From the Aqua fat quarters (to make 8 stars),
                Cut 5- 1 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 64- 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares
                Cut 1- 2 1/2" x 21" strip; cross cut into 8- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares

-From the Pink fat quarters (to make 8 stars),
                Cut 5- 1 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 64- 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares
                Cut 1- 2 1/2" x 21" strip; cross cut into 8- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares

-From the White background fabric (for all of the white portions of the blocks),
                Cut 6- 2 1/2" x 42" strips; cross cut into 144- 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces
                Cut 6- 1 1/2" x 42" strips; cross cut into 144- 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares

Here are my blocks-  I've made the stars and then started assembling the strips to border the quilt center.

To assemble as we go:

Sew 8 stars together to yield a side border that measures 4 1/2" x 32 1/2", including the seam allowances.  Repeat this step to make a total of 2 side borders.  Sew each side border onto the sides of the quilt top center.

Make 2 side borders, 4 1/2" x 32 1/2"

Then, sew 10 stars together to yield a top/bottom border that measures 4 1/2" x 40 1/2", including the seam allowances.  Repeat this step to make a total of 2 top/bottom borders.  Sew each top/bottom border onto the top and bottom of the quilt top center.

Make 2 top/bottom borders, 4 1/2" x 40 1/2"

The quilt top will now measure 40 1/2" x 40 1/2", including the seam allowances.

-From the 3/8 yard of Tangerine fabric,
                Cut 4- 1 3/4" x 42" strips

For the border, join 4- 1 3/4” x 42” strips of Tangerine fabric together end to end.  Trim two pieces measuring 40 1/2” long. Sew these strips to the sides of the quilt top. Press. Trim the two strips to 43” long. Sew these strips to the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press. The quilt top should now measure 43” x 43”, including the seam allowances.

That's it for this week!  I hope you enjoy sewing this week's blocks!  Let me know if you have any questions!  If you'd like, use the hashtag #savortheseasonquilt and #seasontotastequiltbook to share your progress.

Talk to you soon,

  1. Thank you for sharing this. I just got my fabric and am ready to get started. I finished your Little Village quilt and love my results! I look froward to making more quilts from your Season to Taste book.
