This week, in Week 2, we are making the 4 double star blocks and 1 Dutchman's puzzle. The instructions for the blocks can be found in the 'Tradition' pattern (from Season to Taste: Quilts that Warm Your Home All Year Long) that begins on page 65.
To make the 4 double star blocks, you will follow the instructions on page 67-68 under the header called "Making the Double Star Blocks". Follow steps 1- 5 to make the 4 double star blocks.
To make the 1 Dutchman's puzzle block, you will follow the instructions on page 67 under the header called "Making the Goose Chase Block". Follow steps 1- 4 to make the 1 block.
When you go to the instructions in the book, each step tells you exactly what size pieces you need to make each part of the block so you can use those sizes to cut your pieces. If you are making exactly as I am, I will tell you the cutting instructions for your fabric below-
If you are making the quilt using Strawberry Honey or following the color scheme that I am, here are the cutting instructions-
For the Double Star Blocks:
-From the Red fat quarters (for the dark portions of the flying geese on the little star),
Cut 3- 1 3/4" x 21" strips; cross cut into 32- 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" squares
-From the Pink fat quarters (for the center of the little star),
Cut 1- 3" x 21" strip; cross cut into 4- 3" x 3" squares
-From the Aqua fat quarters (for the dark portions of the flying geese on the large star),
Cut 3- 3 3/8" x 21" strips; cross cut into 16- 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" squares
-From the Orange fat quarters (for the HSTs),
Cut 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 8- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares
-From the White background fabric (for all of the white portions of the blocks),
Cut 1- 3" x 42" strip; cross cut into 16- 1 3/4" x 3" pieces
Cut 1- 1 3/4" x 42" strips; cross cut into 16- 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" squares
Cut 1- 6 1/4" x 42" strips; cross cut into 4- 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" squares
Cut 1- 3 1/2" x 42" strips; cross cut into 8- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares
For the Dutchman's Puzzle Block (aka Goose Chase block):
-From the Pink fat quarters (for the flying geese),
Cut 1- 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" square
-From the Red fat quarters (for the flying geese),
Cut 1- 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" square
-From the White background fabric (for all of the white portions of the blocks),
Cut 1- 3 3/8" x 42" strip; cross cut into 8- 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" squares
Often during quilt alongs, if possible, I try to assemble as I go. It's not always possible because sometimes you want to see all of the blocks before you decide on the layout. However, it is possible with this quilt since it is medallion and I'm planning to assemble as I go. If you'd like to join me in assembling as we go, here are the instructions. If you do not want to assemble as we go, you can wait until the final week as listed in our schedule.
To assemble as we go, you will take the blocks made in Week 1 and Week 2 any lay them out as shown below. Sew the blocks into rows and so the rows together to make the center of the quilt top.
Cut 3- 1 1/2" x 42" strips. Set the rest of the Aqua fabric aside for the binding of the quilt later on.
For the first border, join 3- 1 1/2” x 42” strips of Aqua fabric together end to end (depending on the exact width of your fabric and the width of the selvedge that you need to trim off, you may need to join 4- 1 1/2" x 42" strips. The 4th strip has been accounted for in the fabric requirements. However, I was able to use 3 for these borders). Trim two pieces measuring 30 1/2” long. Sew these strips to the sides of the quilt top. Press. Trim the two strips to 32 1/2” long. Sew these strips to the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press. The quilt top should now measure 32 1/2” x 32 1/2”, including the seam allowances.
That's it for this week! I hope you enjoy sewing this week's blocks! Let me know if you have any questions! If you'd like, use the hashtag #savortheseasonquilt and #seasontotastequiltbook to share your progress.
Talk to you soon,
Jessica
