Savor the Season Quilt Along

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Week 4, we are making the 12 strip blocks.  The instructions for the blocks can be found in the 'Skipping Stones' pattern (from Season to Taste: Quilts that Warm Your Home All Year Long) that begins on page 17.

To make the 12 strip blocks  you will follow the instructions on page 20, following steps 5- 6. IMPORTANT: We are making 12 B blocks (not the 4 listed in the pattern in step 6).

When you go to the instructions in the book, each step tells you exactly what size pieces you need to make each part of the block so you can use those sizes to cut your pieces (also refer to the cutting instructions on page 17 for cutting information on the small and large triangles used in the block.  If you are making exactly as I am, I will tell you the cutting instructions for your fabric below-

If you are making the quilt using Strawberry Honey or following the color scheme that I am, here are the cutting instructions-

For the 12 Strip Blocks:

-From the Red fat quarters (for the Rail Fence units),
                Cut 4- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 48- 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" pieces

-From the Tangerine fat quarters (for the Rail Fence units),
                Cut 4- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 48- 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" pieces

-From the Green fat quarters (for the Rail Fence units),
                Cut 4- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 48- 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" pieces

-From the Aqua fat quarters (for the block center),
                Cut 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 12- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares

-From the White background fabric (for all of the white portions of the blocks),
Cut 2- 6" x 42" strips; cross cut into 12- 6" x 6" squares, cut each square on BOTH diagonals yield 4 triangles per square (and a total of 48 triangles for all 12 squares)
Cut 2- 3 1/2" x 42" strips; cross cut into 24- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares, cut each square on ONE diagonal yield 2 triangles per square (and a total of 48 triangles for all 24 squares)

A note on trimming-  The instructions for making these blocks tell you to trim your block to measure 9" square.  In case you are not sure of how, you will lay your untrimmed block on your cutting mat.  Using a large square ruler (that is 9" square or bigger), put the ruler on top of the block and line the center of the block with the 4.5" lines on the ruler (both horizontally and vertically).  Then carefully trim away the excess on the top and right side of the square ruler.

Pick up the ruler, rotate your block 180 degrees.  Put the ruler back on top of the block.  The 9" ruler lines should lay perfectly on the edges you just trimmed.  Also, the 4.5" horizontal and vertical lines should pass through the center of the block.  Carefully trim away the excess on the top and right side of the square ruler.  The block will now measure 9" square.

Here are a few of my blocks-
