Savor the Season Quilt Along
Week 5- April 30- Geese blocks- this week
Week 6- May 7- Assemble the quilt top
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Week 5, we are making the 12 geese blocks. The instructions for the blocks can be found in the 'Skipping Stones' pattern (from Season to Taste: Quilts that Warm Your Home All Year Long) that begins on page 17.
To make the 12 geese blocks you will follow the instructions on pages 19 & 20, following steps 1- 4. IMPORTANT: We are making 12 A blocks (not the 5 listed in the pattern in step 4).
When you go to the instructions in the book, each step tells you exactly what size pieces you need to make each part of the block so you can use those sizes to cut your pieces (also refer to the cutting instructions on page 17 for cutting information on the small and large triangles used in the block. If you are making exactly as I am, I will tell you the cutting instructions for your fabric below-
If you are making the quilt using Strawberry Honey or following the color scheme that I am, here are the cutting instructions-
For the 12 Geese Blocks:
-From the Pink fat quarters (for the flying geese units),
Cut 5- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 48- 2" x 3 1/2" piece
-From the Aqua fat quarters (for the flying geese units),
Cut 5- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 48- 2" x 3 1/2" pieces
-From the Green fat quarters (for the block center),
Cut 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips; cross cut into 12- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares
-From the White background fabric (for all of the white portions of the blocks),
Cut 10- 2" x 42" strips; cross cut into 192- 2" x 2" squares
Cut 2- 6" x 42" strips; cross cut into 12- 6" x 6" squares, cut each square on BOTH diagonals yield 4 triangles per square (and a total of 48 triangles for all 12 squares)
Cut 2- 3 1/2" x 42" strips; cross cut into 24- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares, cut each square on ONE diagonal yield 2 triangles per square (and a total of 48 triangles for all 24 squares)
If you need help with the trimming again, please refer to last weeks post (HERE) because the trimming is done in the exact same way.
Here is one of my blocks-
To assemble as we go:
Sew 3 strip blocks (from last week) and 2 geese blocks together to yield a side border that measures 9" x 43", including the seam allowances. Repeat this step to make a total of 2 side borders. Sew each side border onto the sides of the quilt top center.
Make 2 side borders, 9" x 43"
Then, sew 3 strip blocks (from last week) and 4 geese blocks together to yield a top/bottom border that measures 9" x 60", including the seam allowances. Repeat this step to make a total of 2 top/bottom borders. Sew each top/bottom border onto the top and bottom of the quilt top center.
Make 2 top/bottom borders, 9" x 60"
The quilt top will now measure 60" x 60", including the seam allowances.
That's it for this week! I hope you enjoy sewing this week's blocks! Next week we will put the final border on! Let me know if you have any questions! If you'd like, use the hashtag #savortheseasonquilt and #seasontotastequiltbook to share your progress.
Talk to you soon,
Jessica
