Savor the Season Quilt Along

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Week 6, we are assembling the quilt top.  If you have been assembling as we go, you'll only need to add the two final borders (just skip down to the final border part of this post).  If you have not been assembling as we go, you'll put your top together this week.

To begin assembly-

You will take the blocks made in Week 1 and Week 2 any lay them out as shown below.  Sew the blocks into rows and so the rows together to make the center of the quilt top.

-From the 7/8 yard of Aqua fabric,
Cut 3- 1 1/2" x 42" strips.  Set the rest of the Aqua fabric aside for the binding of the quilt later on.

For the first border, join 3- 1 1/2” x 42” strips of Aqua fabric together end to end (depending on the exact width of your fabric and the width of the selvedge that you need to trim off, you may need to join 4- 1 1/2" x 42" strips.  The 4th strip has been accounted for in the fabric requirements.  However, I was able to use 3 for these borders). Trim two pieces measuring 30 1/2” long. Sew these strips to the sides of the quilt top. Press. Trim the two strips to 32 1/2” long. Sew these strips to the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press. The quilt top should now measure 32 1/2” x 32 1/2”, including the seam allowances.

Using the stars from Week 3, sew 8 stars together to yield a side border that measures 4 1/2" x 32 1/2", including the seam allowances.  Repeat this step to make a total of 2 side borders.  Sew each side border onto the sides of the quilt top center.

Make 2 side borders, 4 1/2" x 32 1/2"

Then, sew 10 stars together to yield a top/bottom border that measures 4 1/2" x 40 1/2", including the seam allowances.  Repeat this step to make a total of 2 top/bottom borders.  Sew each top/bottom border onto the top and bottom of the quilt top center.

Make 2 top/bottom borders, 4 1/2" x 40 1/2"

The quilt top will now measure 40 1/2" x 40 1/2", including the seam allowances.

-From the 3/8 yard of Tangerine fabric,
                Cut 4- 1 3/4" x 42" strips

For the border, join 4- 1 3/4” x 42” strips of Tangerine fabric together end to end.  Trim two pieces measuring 40 1/2” long. Sew these strips to the sides of the quilt top. Press. Trim the two strips to 43” long. Sew these strips to the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press. The quilt top should now measure 43” x 43”, including the seam allowances.

Sew 3 strip blocks (from last week) and 2 geese blocks together to yield a side border that measures 9" x 43", including the seam allowances.  Repeat this step to make a total of 2 side borders.  Sew each side border onto the sides of the quilt top center.

Make 2 side borders, 9" x 43"

Then, sew 3 strip blocks (from last week) and 4 geese blocks together to yield a top/bottom border that measures 9" x 60", including the seam allowances.  Repeat this step to make a total of 2 top/bottom borders.  Sew each top/bottom border onto the top and bottom of the quilt top center.

Make 2 top/bottom borders, 9" x 60"

The quilt top will now measure 60" x 60", including the seam allowances.

-From the 1/2 yard of Red print fabric,
                Cut 6- 2 1/2" x 42" strips

For the border, join 6- 2 1/2” x 42” strips of Red fabric together end to end.  Trim two pieces measuring 60” long. Sew these strips to the sides of the quilt top. Press.
