On Point QAL: Fabric Requirements and Color Options

Thank you for your enthusiastic response to my QAL!  I'm very excited to be sharing this pattern and teaching exactly how to make it!

We will be making the above quilt!  I'm calling this the On Point Quilt Along!  You can follow me on Instagram and share your pictures using the hashtag #onpointqal

Originally when I was planning for the year, I planned this QAL to teach how to set a quilt on point.  But, while sharing about it on Instagram, I had a lot of people ask me if a beginner could join.  Well, I have decided to add some extra tutorials so that adventurous beginners can join!  (I say adventurous because, while I will give all of the information that I can, you will still need to be ready to go ahead and try this out with the awareness that it might not turn out perfectly.  But I'll do my be a to help you get a usable quite and a great quilting experience :) ) Please pass this information to anyone you know who might be interested in learning to quilt!  I'd love to help as many people as I can get started in quilting!

The QAL starts March 1st.  So, in the next month before the QAL, during the QAL, and after it officially ends, I am going to share posts or tutorials on fabric requirements and how to choose fabric for this QAL, quilting tools you'll need to get started, how to press and cut fabric, making half square triangles, making the blocks, setting the quilt on point and assembling the top, choosing batting, basting, quilting, and binding!! So, get ready, we are going to make a beautiful quilt together!

Here is the official schedule for the QAL-

Before it starts we will have some tutorials to get started and after it ends, we will go over batting, basting, quilting, and binding.

I've made this in pink to test it out.  Here is the layout and placement of each fabric (so you know what goes where and you can make the substitutions you'd like)

This quilt measures about 68" x 68".

Onto the fabric requirements!

To make this quilt, you will need-

2 1/4 yards of light color
1 3/4 yards dark color
1 3/4 yards white
4 1/2 yards backing
3/4 yard binding
Twin sized batting- 72" x 90"

To make the exact quilt that I made, you will need the following:

2 1/4 yards of Moda Bella Solids Betty’s Pink 9900-120
1 3/4 yards Moda Bella Solids Tea Rose 9900-89
1 3/4 yards Moda Bella Solids Off White 9900-200
4 1/2 yards backing
3/4 yard binding
The Warm Company Warm & Plush- Twin sized batting- 72" x 90"

So how about some other color options!  I made up a bunch of color versions to show you so that you can get some ideas of which one you might like to make.

Buttercream yellow-

Pink & Gray-

Red & Aqua-

How about some Christmas colors!!  It's never to early to get ready for next Christmas ;)

Also, I made up a few using one print instead of the darker color in my quilt.

I made a couple using Little Snippets by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics.  Here is the white and aqua dot and the aqua gingham-

Little Snippets the white and red dot and the red stitch-

Little Snippets the white and charcoal dot and the charcoal stitch-

Little Snippets the white and charcoal dot and the charcoal floral-

Little Snippets pink stitch plus a solid pink-

In the next few, I used Feed Sacks Red Rover by Linzee Kull McCray for Moda Fabrics.  This one uses Dark Blue Botanica (23310 11) and Bella Solids Regatta 9900 305

This one uses Tip Toe Ruby (23317 14) and Bella Solids Bettys Red 9900 123

This one uses Sprigs Sunshine (23316 17) and Bella Solids Yellow 9900 24

I also did two versions of all print just so you can see how it would look if you wanted to make a scrappy version or use a new line.  I am still working out the exact fabric requirements of a print version.  I'll update you when I have them.  But, I wanted to show you think pictures so you could get an idea of a print version.

This one is Chloe's Closet 30s Playtime 2018-

This one is Flour Sacks by Me & My Sister (which isn’t out quite yet, it is due out in February).

So, did I give you enough ideas??  Which version are you planning to make??  Tell me in the comments or on my latest Instagram post.

Talk to you soon,

  1. My daughter would love to see this in purple. Could you please make a purple version as well? Her old quilt is getting small and she wants me to make her a bigger one. This QAL will be perfect for that.

    1. Hi! I just added a purple version to the post so that you can have a look at it. Thanks!

  2. Hi Jessica. Thanks for doing this! I'd like to use the new flour sack collection. It is so cheerful! If I buy one layer cake will that work? Plus backing and binding, of course.

    1. Hi! Yes, a layer cake of Flour Sack will be enough for the print portions. Then you'll need 2.5 yards of background (and the binding and backing like you mentioned). So glad you are joining in! Let me know if you have any other questions! Jessica

  3. Will this be available to do later, or will there be alternatives. I would love to join but I am in the process of decorating the house and then away on holiday, so it is really not a propitious start time for me.

    1. Hi!

This will always be a free pattern that will be available on my blog here. So, you'll be able to come back and access it whenever you like :) Thanks! Jessica

  4. I also just found out about this QAL and would like the pattern BUT it is not on your blog. I spent an hour looking for it. Can you help please

    1. Hi,

I am sorry you had a hard time finding it! But, it is on my blog and has been since I published the QAL. Currently, if you go to the 'Quilt Patterns & Tutorials, tab above and then scroll down, it is the 2nd picture down from the top. The links to all the weeks are directly below the picture and you can follow through the weeks to get the directions to make it. Each week has instructions and a PDF for the week at the bottom of the post. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
