2019 Year Long Project- January Update

January has come to an end.  To be honest, it felt like it was a really long month (not exactly in a bad way at all, just more like- how was christmas only a month ago!?)

In January, I told you about my goal to have a year long project for 2019.  I'm looking to make a quilt make entirely of 2" (finished) half square triangles (HST).  I'd like mine to be king-sized-ish- I'm aiming for 104" x 104".  To do this, I'll need 2704 HST.  I'll work on it each month, using 3" pieces of  fabric from other quilts that I'm making and, at the end of the year, I'll be left with a quilt that has a little piece of all of the other quilts that I made in 2019.

You can find my first post in this series here.

At the end of January, I was able to make 13- 16 patches from my HST.

If I stay at the same pace, I'll be close to getting to my goal at the end of the year.  For the rest of the year I'll need to have- 2 months that yield 15- 16 patches and the remaining months yield 14- 16 patches.  I think that'll be close to doable.  In January, I made two quilts that both used solids- one only used white and pink and the other used 2 pinks and white.  So I only got 3 squares out of those two quilts.  If I continue at the same quilt-making rate but use prints, then I'll definitely get 15- 16 patches for February.

During the month of February,

-save 3" squares from all of the quilts/projects that I'm making in February

-set aside cut-offs from flying geese (as long as they are big enough to get a 2.5" HST out of them)

-in free time, sew 2 at a time HST

-trim the HST to 2.5" square

At the end of February,

-finish making and trimming the HST from the month's fabric

-make 16 patches with the available HSTs

I'll do a check in at the end of each February.  Meanwhile, if you are joining in, share your progress on Instagram at #2019yearlongproject and #jessicadayonpatterns

  1. This sounds like an amazing project! I would like to join in but would want my project to be a postage stamp quilt. I assume it doesn't matter what our pattern is, as long as it's part of this year long project. Right?
Love your site and love the HST project you are doing!

    1. Hi Jayne! Yes, it would be wonderful if you join and do your postage stamp quilt! I can't wait to see some pictures of yours! I'd love to make a postage quilt one day as well. How big are you making your squares? Thank you for leaving a comment! -Jessica

  2. I'm late to the party but I think I'll join in as well. I've been wanting to do a large, half square triangle quilt. I will probably soon for Queen size though. This will be fun!!

  3. I have a large gallon sized zipper bag full off HSTs of all different sizes. I doubt I will have enough HSTs by the end of the year to make even a lap sized quilt. But I will see how it goes. I will be reading your progress posts and enjoying watching on the sidelines as you meet your goal!
