Independence Quilt Along: Week 9- Add Borders



Hi, Quilty Friends! We are now on the final week of the Independence Quilt Along!  I am always surprised by how fast it feels like it goes by!  In the beginning of all of my QALs, I think how long we have to complete the steps and make the quilt.  But, it always feels like ti flies by SO fast and I am blow away that I actually made a quilt in what feels like a blink of an eye.

Here is the General Schedule we will be following--


Here is the DETAILED SCHEDULE based on the specific size quilts that we will be following for the Independence Quilt Along:





This week, for Week 9, we are adding the borders!  It is pretty easy and the same for all sizes!  We have 3 borders to add to our quilt.

You will use the border pieces that you cut out and the borders to the quilt.  When I add borders.  I start by sewing one strip flush to an end and then continue sewing the strip the entire length of that side of the quilt.  Then once I get to the end, I trim the extra fabric so that the border fits the quilt perfectly.  


Throw Size 64" x 64"


From Border 1,
          ☐ cut 6- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From Border 2,
          ☐ cut 6- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From the Background,
          ☐ cut 6- 3 1/2” x WOF strips (For Border 3)

BORDER 1-

Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Repeat with one more strip to end up with a total of 4- 3 1/2" x 21" pieces.  Piece 1- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 1 pieces and 1- 3 1/2" x 21" Border 1 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 64” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 2-

Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Repeat with one more strip to end up with a total of 4- 3 1/2" x 21" pieces.  Piece 1- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 2 pieces and 1- 3 1/2" x 21" Border 2 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 64” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 3-

Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Repeat with one more strip to end up with a total of 4- 3 1/2" x 21" pieces.  Piece 1- 3 1/2” x WOF Background pieces and 1- 3 1/2" x 21" Background pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 64” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 



Large Throw/Twin Size- 76" x 76"


From Border 1,
          ☐ cut 6- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From Border 2,
          ☐ cut 6- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From the Background,
          ☐ cut 8- 3 1/2” x WOF strips (For Border 3)

BORDER 1-

Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Repeat with one more strip to end up with a total of 4- 3 1/2" x 21" pieces.  Piece 1- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 1 pieces and 1- 3 1/2" x 21" Border 1 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 64” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 2-

Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Repeat with one more strip to end up with a total of 4- 3 1/2" x 21" pieces.  Piece 1- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 2 pieces and 1- 3 1/2" x 21" Border 2 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 64” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 3-


Piece 2- 3 1/2” x WOF Background pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 86” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 



Full Size- 87" x 87"

From Border 1,
          ☐ cut 8- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From Border 2,
          ☐ cut 8- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From the Background,
          ☐ cut 9- 3 1/2” x WOF strips (For Border 3)

BORDER 1-


Piece 2- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 1 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 86” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 2-


Piece 2- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 2 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 86” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use two of these pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. Take the remaining two border pieces and sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 3-


Piece 2- 3 1/2” x WOF Background pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 86” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use these two pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the top and bottom border pieces to exactly fit the quilt.  Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Take the remaining 2- 3 1/2" x 86" border pieces and sew 1- 3 1/2" x 21" pieces to each of them to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 107" pieces.  Sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 





Queen Size- 98" x 98"


From Border 1,
          ☐ cut 9- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From Border 2,
          ☐ cut 10- 3 1/2” x WOF strips

From the Background,
         ☐ cut 10- 3 1/2” x WOF strips (For Border 3)

BORDER 1-


Piece 2- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 1 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 86” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Use these two pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the top and bottom border pieces to exactly fit the quilt.  Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Take the remaining 2- 3 1/2" x 86" border pieces and sew 1- 3 1/2" x 21" pieces to each of them to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 107" pieces.  Sew these on as the left and right borders.  Trim the border pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 2-


Piece 2- 3 1/2” x WOF Border 2 pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 86” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Repeat once more to yield a total of 4- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Take the remaining a 3 1/2" x 86" border piece and sew 1- 3 1/2" x 21" piece to it to yield 1- 3 1/2" x 107" pieces.  Use these two pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the top and bottom border pieces to exactly fit the quilt.  Sew the remaining two on as the left and right borders.  Trim the borders pieces to exactly fit the quilt. 

BORDER 3-


Piece 2- 3 1/2” x WOF Background pieces together, end to end, to yield a 3 1/2” x 86” piece.  Repeat three more times.  Take 1- 3 1/2" strip and cut it in half lengthwise to yield 2- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Repeat once more to yield a total of 4- 3 1/2" x 21" strips.  Take the remaining a 3 1/2" x 86" border piece and sew 1- 3 1/2" x 21" piece to it to yield 1- 3 1/2" x 107" pieces.  Use these two pieces as the top and bottom borders.  Trim the top and bottom border pieces to exactly fit the quilt.  Sew the remaining two on as the left and right borders.  Trim the borders pieces to exactly fit the quilt.
